Example:

Dystopia.
My friends have all gone. The sun doesn’t shine here anymore. I’m what’s left. Just me.

I’m mostly tarnished as my green color continues to fade. My petals are long gone. No bees pollinate me. There is no music. The birds have left. It’s just the hum of electricity.

Powered by a machine. The very machine that is depriving life from this planet. I must stand tall and reach for the invisible rays. They are there. I can feel them when the wind blows. I could come unplugged. I’m a reflection of what’s left, of what’s coming.

Just me.

Assessment of Unit:
The Learning Objectives meet the Common Core and Essential Standards for the state and classroom learning objectives. The goals are obtainable, and the measurement of student knowledge can be assessed informally through classroom discussion, assignments, and formally through the Unit Assessment of the presentation. The presentation is a compilation of lesson plan objectives that answer the three Unit goals; What is Utopia? What is Dystopia? Why is this important?

I do believe that additional lessons can be added that will provide an enriched learning experience. A history component could be added that allows students to visualize the dystopian state in which The Hunger Games takes place. I would add The Hunger Games map of the United States. In this lesson, an excerpt about the Gulags would be an interesting addition.

In the current Unit Plan, students can meet the core standards and the learning objectives that are in place. Learning is scaffold for Entering ESL students with advanced expectations for Reaching and Bridging students under WIDA guidelines.
