Library Camp Day 1

Activity 1

Ocean in a Bottle
Materials:

Water

Baby oil

Blue food dye

Bottle

Funnel (can use an empty water bottle as a funnel).

Students will observe sea creatures and note patterns (color, shape, number). Using water bottles from the discussion walk, students will select a creature to place inside of the bottle. After mixing water and blue food dye, students will funnel the colored water to a line in the bottle. Add baby oil, filling the bottle completely. Close lid tightly.

Observe:

  • Q: How does water mix with oil?

  • Q: Where is your sea creature in the bottle? What is their position?

  • Q: What happens when you tip your bottle sideways?

  • Q: This is a small amount of oil and we are using it to create an ocean in a bottle. Describe the inside of your bottle. Does it have waves?

  • Now- Think about an oil spill. Imagine a lot of oil in the water. What happens to your sea creature?  What happens to their food supply?

Ambergris Caye

Break Time! UNCW hosted two camp sessions. During our break, UNCW would play soccer, take pictures, and share stories with the campers. Break time generally lasted two hours. Most campers would remain in the picnic area while the teachers found lunch.

How much trash can the ocean hold?

Students lined up and passed trash to the end of the line. The last student was to hold everything they received. Students discussed what happens if trash continues to go into the ocean, and how they could help keep trash from ending up in the ocean. Students explored local ways of managing trash.
